Segment 1 (4:44): We start today’s show with Carly Szczygiel, a Registered Dietician and Case Manager for Univera Healthcare. First we talk about mindful eating. Carly tells us what this is, how it’s gotten a lot attention lately, and how it affects your relationship with food. Carly then does a piece of mindfulness with us with her cup of coffee to give us an example of what mindful eating entails. Next we discuss how mindful eating can be challenging and Carly walks us through the ways we can be more mindful. Today we are discussing how March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and that it is now recommended to be screened for colorectal cancer at 45 and not wait until you are 50. First we discuss why the American Cancer Society lowered the age for cancer screening. Then Dr. Picano tells us some information about where the colon is, what the different colon screenings are, and why a colonoscopy is considered the gold standard. Finally we discuss who is at risk for getting colorectal cancer, what you can do to lower your risk of getting colorectal cancer, and if colorectal cancer can be cured. Segment 4 (48:17): Next we welcome Dr. Steven Novelli, a Chiropractic Physician at, and owner of, Novelli Wellness Center. Dr. Novelli starts us off by discussing that it’s not about the pain, but what the pain is holding you back from. He discusses his team of doctors that will work with you to give you the best possible outcome. Sometimes curing your pain does need surgery and that’s why today Dr. Novelli brings with him Dr. Vigna, an Orthopedic Spinal Surgeon from the reVive Spine Center. Segment 5 (1:05:54): The second half of our show begins with Michael, Executive Director of the South Buffalo Community Association who is also running the Tosh Collins Senior Center. First we talk about how they were closed during Covid. Then hear how they have been reopened for about a year and a half and how much their memberships and programs are growing. Then Michael and Linda talk about the stereotypes of Senior Centers and how they are not correct– Senior Centers are SO much fun! Next we talk about some of their fitness classes. Segment 6 (1:21:01): Kerry Peek, Director of the Cheektowaga Senior Center, is our next guest. First we talk about how diverse our Senior Group is and all of the things Kerry hears that they want to do. Kerry is hearing how many seniors want to go back to work. She tells us how they are having a Senior Job Fair on April 26th, held at the Cheektowaga Senior Center, from 2-4pm. They are going to have employers there who have senior friendly, part time work. She also tells us some of the businesses that will be there and a group who can look over your resume. There is no registration needed for you to come to this event. The next piece of the Senior Job Fair is a dinner on April 26, that needs registration, but it is free to attend. There will be mini seminars between each part of the meal. Segment 7 (1:33:04): Next we talk about the topic of Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). We will be discussing this topic with Dr. John Legarreta, a board-certified ophthalmologist providing comprehensive medical and surgical eyecare since 2015. He practices at Legarreta Eye Care and is also a Catholic Member Physician. First hear what AMD is. Next Dr. Legarreta tells us the symptoms and how they can vary depending on if it’s early state or late stage, including blurry vision. Then we discuss the differences between “wet” and “dry” Macular Degeneration. Next hear what the only way to get diagnosed is. Segment 8 (1:47:46): We wrap up today’s show with local discrimination attorney Lindy Korn. We start off by discussing how Lindy takes on age discrimination cases. She discusses how our senior population are very proud of their job or career and the hard work they do. Then if they are terminated for age related causes, they come see Lindy and Lindy tells us what she is hearing from her senior clients. We talk about the tremendous trauma caused by ending your work life by force instead of choice. This is where Lindy would suggest therapy to her clients by a therapist like Bradley Hamm who is in studio with us. Bradley Hamm is founder and therapist of A Peace of My Mind Licensed Clinical Social Work. He tells us what he is seeing with his clients and why it is so important to have therapy and how it is different from talking to family or friends.
